PART-TIME WEEKEND COUNSELOR

Emergency Shelter

 

General Statement of Duties:

Provide counseling and support services to victims of domestic violence and their children, to include crisis intervention, intake services, individual and group counseling and advocacy/case management.  Ability to handle immediate crisis situations and work with diverse populations.

Hours:

Saturday       3:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Sunday      11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Wednesday 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Operational knowledge of counseling and crisis intervention methods.
  • Basic knowledge of domestic violence and its effects on the family.
  • Ability to exercise the basic skills of a counselor, i.e., good listening skills, supportive confrontation, etc.
  • Ability to develop a relationship with clients; ability to be sensitive to client needs.
  • Ability to utilize basic case-planning skills, including goal setting and termination planning.
  • Understanding of team concept and ability to work well within a team.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers and personnel from other agencies.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize aspects of work and to follow through on all work assigned.
  • Ability to readily acquire skills through on-the-job training and/or other educational opportunities.
  • Ability to act and react in stressful or threatening situations with effective and appropriate crisis intervention skills.
  • Ability to assess information and make responsible decisions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in both oral and written form.

 

EDUCATION:  BA degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.

 

EXPERIENCE:  One year experience in crisis intervention including a working knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence.

 

OR

 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Work Environment: Work is generally confined to a standard residential facility environment.  The nature of the work may subject the employee to potentially threatening situations from time to time.  A feminist environment that empowers and supports differences in co-workers and clients.

RESIDENTIAL CHILDREN’S COUNSELOR

Emergency Shelter

Full-time Children’s Counselor position at North Shelter.  The shift is Sunday through Wednesday (10 hour shifts). Provide counseling services to child victim/witnesses of domestic violence.  Includes:  intake services, individual, group, and family counseling, parenting education for parent, crisis intervention, advocacy, referrals, and development of community resources, some public speaking involved. Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or 2 years experience in counseling intervention with children.
